Weapons of Mass Destruction

This collection describes the damage industrial fisheries have on the planet by using their three main fishing techniques that are depleting our oceans. This is a glimpse of what goes on behind the enormous supply of marine-originated food. Our obtaining of resources with no regard for the consequences is a problem that will inevitably ruin our future on this planet.
  • The Gillnet

A gillnet is a wall of netting that hangs in the water column and entangles anything that tries to swim through it. Becuase of this reduced selectivity the amount of bycatch is high.

  • The Longline

Longlines consist of a miles and miles of fishing line with baited hooks every couple feet apart. Because of this reduced selectivity the amount of bycatch is high.

  • The Bottom Trawl

Bottom trawling is a fishing practice that herds and captures the target species by towing a net along the ocean floor. The most damaging and least selective technique yet. This not only destroyes the sea floor but also picks up everything in it's path creating a tremendous amount of bycatch.
